A New Era for Brookgreen Gardens
MURRELLS INLET, S.C. – For the first time in over two decades, a beloved South Strand attraction is experiencing growth and transformation. While one project is still under construction, visitors can now enjoy new exhibits, facilities, and programs at Brookgreen Gardens. This historical landmark, which first opened its doors nearly a century ago, is undergoing its first major expansion in 25 years.
The changes reflect a broader vision to engage more visitors and provide meaningful experiences that align with modern interests and needs. According to Brookgreen Gardens President and CEO Page Kiniry, the expansion is an opportunity to reach a wider audience while promoting conservation, education, and research.
The Campaign for the Next Generation
A $20 million initiative called “the campaign for the next generation” has already introduced several new features. One of the most notable additions is the native red wolf exhibit at the Low Country Zoo. This new space allows Brookgreen Gardens to become a breeding partner for this endangered species, offering a safe environment for their population to grow.
Another highlight is the newly completed Simpson Art Center. This facility offers figurative sculpting classes taught by artists from around the world. Visitors have the chance to learn from professionals and immerse themselves in the creative process. Karen Perez, a garden enthusiast from Tennessee, recently visited the grounds and was impressed by the artistic offerings.
“I was already blown away by the first sculpture,” she said. “I love being out in nature, even when it’s hot and muggy. It’s still a beautiful way to reconnect with each other and take a break from screens.”
Expanding the Experience
The final project of the campaign will be the construction of a botanical garden indoors. A new conservatory is currently under development and is expected to open in January 2026. This addition will bring a new dimension to the gardens, allowing visitors to explore plant life year-round.
Kiniry believes that these developments will significantly increase visitor numbers. Currently, Brookgreen Gardens welcomes about 380,000 guests annually, but she expects this number to rise as the attraction becomes more inclusive and accessible.
“The zoo appeals to children who love being outdoors, while parents can learn about plants and what they might grow in their own backyards,” Kiniry explained. “For grandparents or great-grandparents, who may not be as mobile, the new spaces offer a comfortable and engaging experience.”

With the expansion, Brookgreen Gardens is becoming a destination that caters to all ages and interests. Whether it’s exploring art, learning about wildlife, or enjoying the beauty of nature, there is something for everyone. The addition of indoor spaces ensures that the gardens remain a place of discovery and relaxation, regardless of the weather.
As the projects continue to unfold, Brookgreen Gardens is positioning itself as a cultural and natural hub that honors its history while embracing the future. With new exhibits, educational programs, and innovative spaces, the gardens are setting the stage for a vibrant and dynamic experience for visitors of all backgrounds.
