GREENPORT, NY

— On Saturday, Greenport will be brought back to life with the illumination, melodies, and enchantment of its cherished carousel.

Following several months of renovation work, a ceremonial ribbon-cutting has been scheduled for 11 a.m.

The Greenport carousel, regarded as the jewel of Mitchell Park by numerous families and tourists, had been
closed until further notice
Since late September.

For the first time since the carousel was initially installed in the pavilion when Mitchell Park first opened almost 25 years ago, it has undergone complete dismantling,” said Kevin Steussi, mayor of Greenport Village, earlier this month. “We’re eagerly anticipating the historic carousel’s return for the upcoming summer season!

In September, as stated by Steussi, a problem with the machinery of the town carousel was reported.

The community has concluded that the malfunction is substantial and necessitates comprehensive renovations to restore the carousel’s functionality,” he stated back then. “Originally, the town was set to conduct an intensive mechanical inspection and undertake necessary fixes post-Christmas and into early 2025 when business slows down; however, these plans must now be expedited. As such, the carousel will remain out of service for a certain duration as part of this repair process prior to being reopened.

Steussi pointed out that the attraction was initially conceived as a portable merry-go-round and thus needed to be set up and dismantled regularly.

For all its years in Mitchell Park, it has never been taken apart; from the start, when it was set up in the carousel pavilion, Steussi mentioned this fact.

The advancement of the carousel was addressed during a Greenport village board meeting held on February 27. At that point, Steussi mentioned that the primary central framework was undergoing repairs at North Fork Welding.

During that gathering, Stuessi talked about possible county financial support to assist with cost reduction. He additionally shared positive developments concerning the horses. “Picture this: throughout more than 100 years, some of these horses had reached ages up to 110, while others could be as young as 50; various events occur over such extended periods,” he stated.

Every type of bolt and screw was taken out, and the restoration team ensured that the horses are “completely stable and rigid; each piece has been firmly secured.” Upon reconstruction, they employed a method allowing for assembly using just a single tool moving forward, which would prove beneficial over time, as mentioned.

“And as we discussed earlier, they’ve brought one horse to their workshop to undergo a full renovation so that we might display it long-term for future fundraising events—allowing people to admire the restored horses and appreciate the elegance of each one,” Steussi stated during the meeting.

The carousel committee will host a discussion about fundraising, according to the mayor, who also expressed his desire for them to create a maintenance strategy.

In 2016, as new

, former Greenport Village Mayor David Kapell received gratitude from Gail Horton of the carousel committee for his foresight in establishing Mitchell Park and facilitating the relocation of the carousel from Riverhead to Greenport.

The carousel had been standing for many years on what used to be the Grumman site in Calverton and was appreciated by numerous employees during Grumman’s yearly picnic.

“It was truly a collective community endeavor,” Kapell stated regarding the relocation. The carousel, which had been kept at Stidd Systems in Greenport, was put together within mere hours. Afterward, as they required electricity, local resident Bill Swelsey was enlisted on a Sunday to “MacGyver” the setup and start thecarousel so it could make its inaugural spin in the town.

Kapell stated during the 2016 event that the carousel represents the historical legacy and future aspirations of Greenport.

This is a marvelous occurrence. Ultimately, each child who has enjoyed the carousel will grow up, start families, and return with their own children. This act plants the seeds for the village’s future prosperity.

After the carousel initially lit up the nighttime sky in the village, Kapell approximated in 2016 that around 2 million people had mounted the decorated wooden horses and attempted to grab the brass ring during their ride.

Recalling his youth at the Central Park carousel, Kapell mentioned how the intricately painted horses, along with the dazzling lights and enchanting music, forge lasting impressions etched deeply into one’s heart and spirit. He described it as, “a fantastical world for children where everything feels like magic.”

When the carousel initially came to Greenport, numerous locals gathered to assist, with present Trustee Robins among them. According to Horton, over time, the carousel was kept not only at Stidd but also at Barstow’s Shipyard and at the intersection of Front Street and Horton Avenue.

In 1994, when Kapell became elected, his primary objective was to dissolve the contentious local police department and subsequently concentrate on the deteriorated Mitchell property, described as being “undergoing foreclosure” with an associated bank that itself faced foreclosure issues.

He mentioned that the package carried potential.

“There was an incredible opportunity,” Kapell stated. Given that the Grumman site was up for grabs and everyone’s attention was on the potential fate of that land, Kapell mentioned that he was completely concentrated on introducing the carousel to Greenport, envisioning it as a precious jewel in the crown of what Mitchell Park might evolve into.

He mentioned that how it developed was “accidental but fortunate.”

Recalling the initial stages, Robins mentioned that blankets were utilized to transport all components collectively for putting them together; she subsequently explained the physical construction process of the carousel. She stated that initially, the carousel served as part of a touring circus and was set up in an open field at each location they halted.

Horton remarked casually that those initial times, when zeal and imagination breathed life into a dream manifested as a carousel at the village center, remain etched in memory.

She exclaimed, “It was enchanting.”
