East Texas Veteran Honors Flag Day with Handcrafted Wooden Tribute

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – As a combat crew member with the U.S. Air Force, Richard Palmer dedicated most of his adulthood to service for his nation.

This year, Palmer committed himself to serving his nation differently by dedicating 200 hours to carving a wooden flag for Flag Day.

The flag, standing at five feet tall, is crafted entirely from wood sourced exclusively from East Texas, and it took Palmer approximately eight weeks to complete this project.

Palmer mentions that the time it took to create this project passed quickly due to his intense dedication and love for country.

“It was a passion. It was 200 hours. I just kept driving because I was inspired,” he says.

Palmer highlighted that Flag Day holds great significance, and composing this work was merely his method of paying tribute to the nation and those who have defended it.

“The flag has been waving in every single war that we’ve had and it’s been tattered and torn up and burned and stomped on and all but it’s still here. It’s still here and it will always be a recognition of our freedom and the ones in the past who have fought.” Palmer says.

Palmer, driven by his dedication to his profession, aspires for more than just local recognition. He dreams of finding someone who truly appreciates its value and can take it further.

Moreover, he wishes that his artwork will motivate others to pay tribute to the history encapsulated within the flag, as well as to acknowledge those who have fought for their nation.
