Actress Tamsin Greig has graced both television and theater for many years. Currently, she stars in Terence Rattigan’s mid-20th century play “The Deep Blue Sea,” yet found some moments to discuss her personal encounters with coastal vacations, specifically mentioning the tranquil beachside community of Swanage.
What is your favorite place to visit and what makes it special for you?
Swanage in
Dorset
It began as a spot where my husband’s family first went in the early ’90s, as far as I recall. We continued this tradition, always leasing the same weather-beaten house perched atop a cliff with his relatives each summer for a couple of weeks. This large, somewhat dilapidated home offered breathtaking views of the ocean. Over roughly three decades, we made annual pilgrimages to that place until recently when it was finally sold, leaving our kids deeply heartbroken.
The last time you visited was when, and who accompanied you?
We continue to return to Swanage annually for a visit, though we refrain from staying overnight. Rather, we opt for a day trip to carry out our personal form of pilgrimage.
What is your favorite dish at this place?
Just like every family vacation, specific customs were always observed. Each time, we’d gather at the seawall for some fish and chips sourced from what I believe might be the finest fish and chip establishment globally—The Fish Plaice. Sitting atop the wall, unwrapped packets in hand, enveloped by an aroma of copious amounts of oil mingled with vinegar—it felt almost obligatory. Without these activities, our trip wouldn’t feel complete. Additionally, nearby lies a quaint hamlet named Worth Matravers, home to what I consider the nation’s superior teashop experience. Naturally, regions such as Cornwall and Devon may contest this claim about its location within Dorset. Nonetheless, one could carry their tea over to enjoy beside a tiny duck pond nestled amidst the village setting. This spot truly feels enchanted; everything served here includes freshly baked scones paired perfectly with locally produced Dorset clotted cream.
What actions would you take if you were limited to just 24 hours in that place?
Therefore, during our yearly tradition, we rise extremely early and head off for a drive. We pass through Swanage while most folks are still asleep, exploring this charmingly traditional British coastal town as it slowly stirs to life.
You’ll notice the small fishing vessels near the shore. If you ascend through Swanage and continue driving towards Worth Matravers, you can find parking in the village and embark on an amazing coastal hike extending from Chapman’s Pool to a diminutive Norman chapel perched atop a cliff. During summertime Sundays, they host brief candlelit church services in the early evening close to where the RNLI lookout station stands. We’d follow this route, return to Worth Matravers for our afternoon tea, traverse back via Swanage, enjoy some fish and chips either on the pier or along the seawall, and perhaps swim as the sun sets before heading home.
What single activity do you suggest not missing?
On Saturdays during the Swanage Carnival – held annually towards the end of July and beginning of August – they showcase a spectacular fireworks show above Swanage Bay. You might choose to spend your time lying down on the expansive common, an impressive verdant area offering panoramic views of both Swanage and the ocean as far as the Old Harry Rocks. Occasionally, the Red Arrows perform overhead. Thus, you can arrive early to catch their aerial demonstration before enjoying the nighttime fireworks later in the evening.
Do you have a secret favorite spot that you’d like to let me know about?
St Aldhelm’s Chapel, perched directly on the cliff edge, exudes such antiquity. It seems saturated with the spirits and stories of countless individuals who have poured their emotions into this spot. This location truly stands as a breathtaking site.
What are your preferred stores?
We would visit this amazing chocolate store located in one of the small alleys behind the town. Named Chococo, they offer ethically sourced chocolates crafted locally with stunning designs. In the past, I often found myself spending quite a bit there. Additionally, there was Hayman’s Bakery, which has since been renamed as The Italian Bakery, situated along the primary street running through Swanage. As you walked by, you could grab fresh bread for the day or some crispy rolls accompanied by exceptionally delicious cakes.
Your packing essential?
I own a simple cotton sweater from the 1990s that I rarely wear around London; instead, I save it for vacations. Hence, it’s become known as my “Swanage” sweater. Once during a theater production in London where we staged a beach scene requiring my character to be dressed casually with a loose-fitting sweater and baggy pants, I mentioned having an ideal sweater for the role. However, the real reason behind choosing this particular piece was due to its generous neckline. This allowed me to cover my face ostensibly out of shock when watching Doon Mackichan perform a provocative burlesque routine designed to surprise everyone. In reality, however, I did this so I could laugh uncontrollably without being noticed.
Is there a song that brings back memories of that place?
On our journey over there, we listen to music, including Tom Petty’s poignant track “Time to Move On.” This song features a lovely rhythm with the lines, “We’re heading out, we’re on our way,” which perfectly matches driving across and taking the small chained ferry from Poole to Studland.
What’s your attire plan for the destination?
You must pack all your clothing since the weather can be unpredictable. Therefore, include plenty of layers. Shorts are essential due to potential heatwaves, yet at the same time, bring sweaters as it might get quite chilly. Don’t forget to add a raincoat and bathing suit to your list too. Oh, and throw in a wetsuit just in case. Simply wearing these three items consistently will ensure you’re prepared for anything.
