OGALLALA, Neb. (KNOP) – A Nebraska State Patrol officer barely avoided being injured when their patrol car was hit on I-80 late at night in Western Nebraska.
Around midnight MT on Thursday, state troopers responded to an incident where a disabled semitrailer was obstructing a lane on I-80 between Roscoe and Ogallala. The stretch of I-80 in this region is presently undergoing construction, allowing for just one lane of traffic in either direction.
While officers were guiding vehicles to maintain traffic movement in the region, a westbound semitrailer did not reduce speed and collided with a trooper’s stationary cruiser, according to NSP. Following this incident, the semitrailer hit the rear of an eastbound semitrailer.
The police officer was absent from their squad car during the incident and managed to move away swiftly to evade the accident. Fortunately, nobody sustained any injuries in this mishap.
The Nebraska State Patrol has asked the Keith County Sheriff’s Office to handle the crash investigation. The operator of the semitrailer received a citation for reckless operation.
The highway I-80 remained shut down for more than sixty minutes following the accident.
