As temperatures rise, you’ll notice an increase in cyclists on the streets, and the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) is offering advice on sharing the roadway safely with these riders during the summer months.
The NDHP aims to emphasize that bicycle safety responsibilities do not only apply to riders but also extend to drivers.
For safety purposes, motorists must stay vigilant about bicyclists, particularly on country roads or those with limited width, and ensure they provide ample clearance when overtaking them. Additionally, drivers ought to avoid distractions and maintain constant attention to driving.
For bicyclists, it is important to wear bright or reflective gear and use lights when needed, ride as far to the right of the road as possible, and to follow all traffic laws. They should also signal turns and make eye contact with drivers when possible.
We simply want to highlight this issue so everyone understands the potential safety risks,” stated Trooper Shea Pulley. “Have conversations with your kids prior to their cycling adventures outside, ensuring they grasp basic traffic regulations and recognize these guidelines pertain to them as well. Additionally, we’re reminding drivers that sharing the road is essential and respecting all individuals present on the streets is crucial.
