Royal Caribbean has not been the initial cruise company to introduce “destination” elevators; however, they appear to have refined this technology more effectively compared to their competitors. The advanced system implemented on ships like the Icon of the Seas, Utopia of the Seas, and the forthcoming Star of the Seas addresses various issues associated with traditional elevators.
Initially, it’s crucial to grasp the functioning of the system.
Visitors input their preferred floor on a tablet, after which they receive a letter as an indicator. They proceed to the corresponding labeled elevator, which will take them directly to their destination floor.
Occasionally, the elevator might stop at several floors, but typically not exceeding two stops.
This system gracefully tackles several issues.
Initially, you always avoid finding yourself in an elevator that’s already at capacity when the doors open. Secondly, you typically steer clear of elevators that either due to their layout or because of multiple button presses by occupants, make frequent stops on each floor.

Royal Caribbean has experimented with adding destination elevators to some of its older vessels but hasn’t implemented them yet. Nonetheless, the cruise line has invested in various technologies that might not be readily apparent to travelers.
“Royal Caribbean Group has made numerous investments in technology. As mentioned by their CEO, Jason Liberty, this includes an advanced yield management system with extensive artificial intelligence capabilities that continually improves,” he stated during the company’s cruise line discussion.

Royal Caribbean is also set to introduce some innovative features for their customers.
“We’re implementing a new travel system focused on enhancing the customer experience rather than emphasizing the cabin amenities. Additionally, we have numerous other contemporary improvement initiatives underway. These efforts aim to apply valuable insights gained from our more recent vessels to upgrade parts of our older fleet,” as he disclosed (though specifics weren’t provided).
Liberty mentioned that he thinks what he usually dislikes has turned into an advantage considering the present economic conditions.
“I believe the blend of what we offer, coupled with the advantage we have over traditional land-based vacations, comes into play here. As many of you on this call know from my previous discussions, the disparity between these options can be quite exasperating. However, during periods of economic uncertainty—something we’ve observed in various sectors—we find that this very discrepancy serves as a strong safeguard for sustaining our vacation offerings. Our guests remain keen on paying for these experiences, thereby helping us achieve our fiscal goals,” he explained.
