For the last twelve months, whenever individuals pass through the checkpoint, our agents can determine whether the person is compliant with regulations or not, specifically regarding possession of a REAL ID,” explained Jessica Mayle, who serves as a regional spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration.
Mayle said TSA officers have been focusing on outreach, handing out reminders to travelers at the security checkpoint about having a REAL ID for domestic air travel starting next week.
“We’ve noticed in the last few weeks that people are really stepping up and taking those reminders seriously because the deadline is here and we want everyone to get through that checkpoint,” she said.
Mayle stated that if you do not possess a REAL ID, you can show alternative forms of identification such as your passport or military ID when passing through the security checkpoint.
Mayle stated that without these documents or a REAL ID, you might face delays, additional scrutiny, and there’s a chance you could be prevented from passing through the security checkpoint.
We plan to attempt processing those individuals; however, we anticipate this process will be more time-consuming,” Mayle stated. “We strongly advise them to allow additional time for their visit at the checkpoint, particularly if they do not have identification.
The Virginia DMV also wishes to emphasize that you can obtain a REAL ID anytime throughout the year.
You have until May, June, July, and beyond to obtain one,” stated Camila Barco, a representative from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. “The Virginia DMV does not set a ‘final date’ for getting a REAL ID.
The agency states that over four million Virginians possess a Real ID. Although REAL ID is not mandatory in Virginia, Barco mentioned that they want to ensure residents have ample chances to obtain one.
Our wait times continue to be efficient,” she stated. “In our attempts to address the increasing demand for Real IDs, we provide a tool that allows customers to check.
projected wait times on our website.”
Mayle thinks that a certain type of ID provides an additional level of security.
We genuinely want to confirm that the individual present is the same as the one listed in our system—the one who made the reservation,” she stated. “My aim is for everyone to feel secure. I understand implementing a new policy might be challenging initially, but ultimately we strive to enhance safety.
