The deadline for getting a Real ID is drawing near, and visitors at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport might encounter holdups if they aren’t ready.
Mark Bailer, who serves as the airport’s Director of Security, stated that ensuring safety for both travelers and employees is their top priority.
“It’s just one more layer of protection that proves your identity.” Bailer explained.
To get a REAL ID, you must provide supporting documents such as an identifying document, another confirming your Social Security number, and two more verifying your residency within Pennsylvania.
Bailer mentioned that the airport is getting ready for a significant amount of air traffic on Wednesday, which will include passengers who do not have a Real ID.
Bailer mentioned that we will have a dedicated line for those who don’t possess a Real ID.
While standard-issued identification, such as a driver’s license, will still be accepted, it could result in longer waiting times.
“You will have to go through a special screening, so you can fly, it just will take you longer. That’s why we request people get here early,” Bailer added.
Other forms of identification, such as a passport, can also be used instead of a Real ID.
“A U.S. passport, passport card, military IDs—things like these come into play. While passports and passport cards are more common, there are additional alternatives available,” explained Bailer.
Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, stated that 81% of travelers are already meeting the Real ID standards.
