Travelers Without REAL ID May Face Extra TSA Scrutiny: GSP Officials Warn

Greer, S.C. (WSPA) — Officials at the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) are alerting passengers about potential issues they might encounter if they do not have a REAL ID.

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) reports that the REAL ID Act was enacted by Congress in 2005. According to officials, this legislation sets forth minimal security requirements for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards intended for use in federal contexts.

A representative stated that the security protocols at GSP will mostly stay the same for travelers. However, individuals arriving at the airport without a REAL ID might face occasional extra screenings at the TSA security checkpoint.

New security procedure at GSP

Beginning on Wednesday, travelers will go through either the regular screening process or opt for TSA PreCheck.

At the document verification area, agents from TSA will assess whether your ID meets REAL ID standards and verify if you have been selected for extra security checks.
