Heavy Rains Flood Parts of Steuben County; Drivers Advised to Exercise Caution

Update: The Steuben County Department of Public Works has issued a statement regarding the road damages caused by the flash floods that occurred across parts of Steuben County on Monday and Tuesday.

The statement from the department highlights that the areas hardest hit by the floods include Greater Hornell, Greater Canisteo, and Greater Woodhull-Jasper.

The announcement also indicates that County Route 68, referred to as the “back road” linking Hornell and Alfred, has suffered significant destruction, such as eroded pipelines, substantial gravel movement, and regions filled with stagnant water. Motorists are urged to exercise utmost care when using County Route 31 and County Route 21 in the Canisteo region due to comparable hazards.

The department also mentions that road crews are currently assessing and repairing impacted regions, particularly those located at elevated heights. Motorists are advised to reduce their speed, change lanes safely, and proceed cautiously through sections where construction activities are underway.

— Intense rainfall persisting through Monday night and continuing into Tuesday resulted in localized floods in certain areas of Steuben County, as stated in an announcement from the Steuben County Office of Emergency Management.

On Monday, May 5, storms led to flooding in regions including Canisteo, Greenwood, Hartsville, Hornellsville, Jasper, and Woodhull. This inundation resulted in water covering multiple roads, leading to their closure.

On Monday evening, flooding led to the closure of State Route 36 from the vicinity of the Village of Canisteo Line to Red Spring Run Road, as reported by authorities. Additionally, Banks Hollow Road was shut down between State Route 417 and County Route 63 due to the same reason.

The condition of these roads remains uncertain, however, drivers are urged to exercise caution and steer clear of these zones.
