LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN)—If you’re preparing for a summertime getaway, make sure to include another item on your checklist—and do so promptly.
Following multiple delays, the Department of Homeland Security is finally poised to implement the May 7 enforcement date for REAL ID.
REAL IDs ought to include a star in the upper-right corner.
Travelers intending to board domestic or international flights are required to present either a state-compliant REAL ID or another valid identification document such as a passport. Should you fail to provide an accepted form of ID, anticipate potential holdups during the security check or possibly being unable to board your flight altogether.
The DOHS said those flyers can also expect additional screening and even the possibility of not being allowed beyond the security checkpoint if their identity cannot be verified.
At the same time, the shortage of air traffic controllers continues to be a national issue.
Sean Duffy, the Transportation Secretary, stated that traffic control facilities throughout the United States lack approximately 3,000 controllers.
“It is our responsibility to look beyond the horizon, identify potential problems, and address them before we face a situation we’d deeply regret,” stated Secretary Duffy.
To combat this, the FAA has been offering higher salaries and bonuses as an incentive, but the hiring and training can still take months.
The Transportation Security Administration alerted travelers to anticipate possible hold-ups throughout this transitional period.
