ST. LOUIS (AP) — Following the conclusion of the first game of a doubleheader at St. Louis on Sunday, New York Mets’ left fielder Jesse Winker will head back to New York rather than continuing with his team to Arizona due to some discomfort on his right side.
After the game, Winker underwent an MRI. However, Manager Carlos Mendoza stated afterwards,
The Mets dropped the late game 5-4.
That additional imagery was required, and it was probable that they would be placed on the injured list.
“He’s going to go back to New York,” Mendoza said. “We need to get more pictures on it. They weren’t clear here. But it looks like an IL situation.”
Winker suffered an injury in the oblique region when he made a toss to home plate during the third inning.

After the second game, Winker stated, ‘I had a good feel for it as soon as I released the ball.’
Winker indicated that it was probably a side injury, however, the tests did not provide definitive results.
I plan to undergo additional testing, and after those results come in and everything is sorted out, we will figure out what’s happening here,” Winker stated. “No matter what it turns out to be, I am in capable hands and it will be addressed.
Mendoza admitted that concerns arise whenever the term “oblique” comes up.
The 31-year-old Winker was getting his initial opportunity to play in left field for the season. This game marked only his second appearance of less than three innings in that position this year, with him primarily being used as a designated hitter so far.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Cardinals filled up the bases with just one out. When Nolan Gorman smacked a fly ball towards Winker, he caught it and quickly fired the ball back toward home plate in an attempt to tag out Brendan Donovan as he dove across the plate safely before catcher Luis Torrens could collect the throw. Ultimately, during this sequence, Nolan Arenado ended up getting tagged out after being involved in a run-down situation.
Jeff McNeil shifted from second base to take over for Winker in left field. Luisangel Acuña, playing his initial game at third base, moved to second position. Mark Vientos came into the game to fill both the vacancy at third base and Winker’s place in the batting order.
During his two at-bats, Winker managed a walk and contributed a sacrifice fly. This season, he has been maintaining a batting average of .239, with one home run and 10 runs batted in over 24 games played.
