ST. LOUIS (AP) — Following the conclusion of the initial game in a doubleheader on Sunday, New York Mets’ left fielder Jesse Winker opted to return directly to New York rather than join his teammates heading to Arizona due to some unease on his right side.
After the game, Winker underwent an MRI. However, Manager Carlos Mendoza stated afterwards
The Mets fell short in the late game with a score of 5-4.
It was determined that additional imaging would be necessary, and it was probable that they would have to place him on the injured list.
Mendoza stated, “He will return to New York. We require additional photographs of it. The images we have aren’t clear enough. However, it seems like an issue with_IL.”
Winker suffered an injury in the oblique region when he made a toss to home plate during the third inning.

After the second game, Winker stated, ‘I had a good feel for it as soon as I released the ball.’
Winker indicated it was probably a glancing blow type of injury, however, the tests did not provide definitive results.
I plan to undergo additional testing and subsequently await the resolution of these before pinpointing what’s happening here,” Winker stated. “No matter what it turns out to be, I’m confident in the support I have here. Everything will be handled appropriately.
Mendoza admitted that there’s always worry whenever the term oblique comes up.
The 31-year-old Winker was getting his initial opportunity to play in left field for the season. This game marked only his second appearance with two total innings spent in left field previously, primarily filling in as a designated hitter instead.
In the third inning, the Cardinals filled the bases with only one out. When Nolan Gorman struck out a flyball towards Winker, he caught it and quickly tossed it to home plate in an attempt to tag Brendan Donovan as he dove in safely ahead of catcher Luis Torrens receiving the ball. Ultimately, Nolan Arenado ended up getting tagged out during this sequence.
Jeff McNeil shifted from second base to take over for Winker in left field. Luisangel Acuña, playing his initial game at third base, moved to second position. Mark Vientos came into the game to fill both the vacancy at third base and Winker’s place in the batting order.
During his two at-bats, Winker took a stroll and contributed a sacrifice fly. This season, he has maintained a batting average of .239, hit one home run, and driven in 10 runs across 24 games played.
