LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – The city’s new master plan might encompass everything from enhanced safety measures to various upgrades, according to Parks and Recreation Director Buddy Timme.
“Over the next decade, we’ll develop a roadmap that outlines our goals, identifies areas for enhancement, and addresses what the community truly desires,” stated Timme.
Timme mentioned that a fresh master plan is being developed, yet the city has remained quite active even without it.
Morris Frank Park now features new multi-use fields, artificial turf for the baseball diamonds, and two dedicated football fields.
LED lighting, upgraded bathrooms, and additional parking are also coming soon.
Timme mentioned that a master plan would encompass multiple parks.
“It also allows us to pursue much more grant funding than previously possible. With an active master plan, many grants necessitate this requirement, making us feel quite optimistic about what lies ahead,” stated Timme.
In order to develop a comprehensive strategy, Parks and Recreation conducted listening sessions and administered a community survey to gauge what Lufkin desired for its parks and trails moving forward.
Timme mentioned that lighting and security issues in city parks were frequent concerns they intend to tackle.
“We’re excited about working on the master plan and gathering input from the community on how we can enhance things,” stated Timme.
Timme mentioned that the city is collaborating with the planning firm Kendig Keast Collaborative to create the strategy. Their aim is to present their findings to the Lufkin City Council by June.
