Longhorn Legacy: Well-Traveled QB Matthew Caldwell Joins Team via Transfer Portal

AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Sunday, Texas strengthened its quarterback lineup with the addition of Matthew Caldwell from Troy University.

Caldwell
has one year of eligibility following a redshirt season during his freshman year at Jacksonville State
Texas will mark his fourth educational institution. After his redshirt year, he competed for two years at the FCS team Gardner-Webb and subsequently transferred to Troy for another year.

Sarkisian reviews the NFL draft and asserts that recruitment efforts will ‘dominate’ at the Houston event.

Caldwell topped the charts for the Trojans with 1,608 passing yards and 13 touchdowns, successfully completing 141 out of 223 pass attempts. He took the lead in the final five games of the 2024 season and appeared in a total of 10 games, including the matchup against Iowa where he was also granted the starting position.

With Arch Manning leading the team as their starting quarterback, Caldwell brings a seasoned influence into the locker room, offering his FBS gameplay expertise to assist redshirt freshmen like Trey Owens and true freshmen such as KJ Lacey. Should Manning face an injury or be unavailable later in the season, Caldwell’s experience would allow him to step up effectively. Additionally, he will join senior Joe Tatum on the squad.
