Enforcement Begins for REAL ID Across the U.S.: What You Need to Know

Visitors must possess a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license—or an alternative acceptable form of identification—to board domestic flights and enter federal buildings following enhanced safety protocols implemented this week.

The enforcement starts on Wednesday, May 7.

Enacted in 2005 following the suggestions of the 9/11 Commission, the REAL ID Act introduced stricter security requirements for driver’slicenses and identification cards issued by states.

REAL ID credentials will be necessary for traveling domestically by air, gaining entry into federal buildings, and obtaining access to specific restricted areas.

IDs that comply with REAL ID standards can now be obtained in all 50 states.

To obtain a REAL ID, go to your nearby Department of Motor Vehicles with the necessary paperwork such as evidence of identification, your Social Security number, and documentation proving your residence. Certain regions may additionally provide Enhanced IDs, allowing you to cross borders into Canada, Mexico, and certain Caribbean countries without needing a passport.
