DELAWARE AND MONTGOMERY COUNTIES, PENNSYLVANIA
Construction for next week includes work on I-476 and southbound I-95 under a $10.4 million plan from PennDOT designed to improve both traffic movement and safety. This effort encompasses deploying Variable Speed Limit (VSL) and Queue Warning (QW) systems over an expanse of 14.5 miles spanning parts of Delaware County and Montgomery County.
The lane closures will occur from Sunday, May 4, to Thursday, May 8, between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM, at the following sites:
- The northbound stretch of Interstate 476 from MacDade Boulevard exit (exit number 1) up to the Media Swarthmore area (exit number 3).
- The northbound and southbound lanes of I-476 from Exit 5 at U.S. 1 to the Marple Road overpass are affected.
- The northbound section of Interstate 476 from I-95 down to MacDade Boulevard (Exit 1).
- The southbound section of I-95 from Ridley Park (Exit 8) to I-476 (Exit 7).
Motorists ought to anticipate potential delays due to possible traffic jams from the closures. The timing of all planned activities hinges on the prevailing weather conditions.
The initiative undertaken by Kuharchik Construction Inc. involves setting up VSL systems designed to showcase variable speed limits adjusted according to current circumstances like traffic density and meteorological factors. This innovation aids in improving traffic efficiency and boosting road safety through decreased variations in driving speeds.
Furthermore, Queue Warning (QW) systems will present digital alerts to drivers about substantial traffic decelerations up ahead. This aims at decreasing sudden stops and fender benders, with these systems being incorporated into Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) current Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure.
The initiative also aids in establishing PennDot’s new Regional Transportation Management Center (RTMC), which will oversee these sophisticated systems. Entirely financed through federal funds, this undertaking marks progress toward enhancing roadway safety and effectiveness throughout the area.
