Time-Travel Back with the 78th Annual Jefferson Pilgrimage

JEFFERSON, Texas – Marion County is offering East Texans a journey through history, reviving the era of muskets and soldiers.

One of the historical events featured at the 78th annual Jefferson Pilgrimage is a Civil War reenactment.

The history of the city of Jefferson traces back to the 1800s, and locals strive to preserve its heritage.

“I believe it’s crucial to maintain this legacy so we can honor those who preceded us and truly unite as a community,” stated Emily Kelsey, a volunteer with the Historical Jefferson Foundation.

Each year, the city recreates the hypothetical Battle of Jefferson. Although no real battle took place, Jefferson was home to a Confederate stronghold during the Civil War. This imaginary clash explores what would have happened had the Union forces assaulted this base.

“The federal forces arrive from behind and seize control of the town, after which we instruct the residents that their town has been occupied and they are now beneath the United States flag,” responded Gary Stephens, a 38-year veteran of Civil War reenactments.

“We rejoice in this and take pride in the reality that Jefferson indeed performed such a piece; thus, the reenactment aids us in maintaining a part of that history alive,” said Stacy Mills, who serves as the president of the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club in Jefferson.

Around 300 reenactors participate.

For almost two decades, Stephens has been driving from his residence in Jonesboro, Louisiana to Jefferson for the Battle of Jefferson.

“I adore it, I adore it. My grandmother instilled a passion for history in my heart. It captivated me, and I’m still fascinated by it today,” stated Stephens.

During the combat, Jefferson additionally presents stage shows, a grand ballroom dinner, and a Civil War-inspired procession in downtown Jefferson.

“I believe it’s crucial to maintain history regardless of where you come from, but Jefferson possesses an exceptionally distinctive past. What makes this place truly remarkable is how the whole community comes together,” stated Kelsey.
