Riverfest Returns This Saturday: A Joyous Celebration of the South River in Waynesboro!

WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) — The annual Riverfest will take place in Waynesboro on Saturday, May 3rd. This full-day celebration focuses on honoring the South River. According to Riverfest board member Urbie Nash, the festival offers activities suitable for attendees of every age group.

“If you’re looking for outdoor activities in this area, this is where you should go,” Nash stated.

For numerous decades, the river was seen as a burden because of significant floods in earlier times; however, Riverfest has altered the local perspective, now viewing the river more as an advantage.

“When I relocated to Waynesboro in 1973, the South River had no fish whatsoever, but currently, we have 25 different species,” Nash stated.

Nash mentioned that the river has bounced back after decades of pollution. The organizations set to showcase their efforts at Riverfest aim to advocate for clean waterways.

It’s a meeting for river conservationists who are passionate about protecting our local water sources,” Nash stated. “This presents a chance to gain knowledge about the condition of our nearby rivers.

Board member Mary Katharine Froelich stated that Riverfest offers an opportunity to discover enjoyable recreational activities available in the nearby waterways.

“The activities like canoeing and kayaking that you can enjoy for fun,” Froelich mentioned.

The South River Great Duck Race stands out as one of the favorite happenings during Riverfest, with the top contender walking away with a $1,000 reward.

“When I arrived in this community 20 years ago, the most incredible sight was watching a front loader crossing the bridge carrying plastic ducks,” Froelich mentioned.
