is looking to ease the stress for those who have to make a trip to the DMV on May 7, which marks the
REAL ID deadline
.
On Friday, the doughnut franchise declared that they would offer every customer a complimentary Original Glazed doughnut throughout the entire day either in-store or through the drive-thru at participating locations on May 7th. This offer limits each person to just one doughnut, and neither a purchase nor an ID is required to receive this free item.
“The DMV experience can be quite stressful under regular circumstances, however, May 7 will bring an unprecedented level of anxiety for numerous Americans aiming to obtain their REAL IDs,” stated Dave Skena, Chief Growth Officer at Krispy Kreme, in a press statement.

“We’ll make this easy for everyone. Stop by on May 7th to enjoy a complimentary Original Glazed doughnut from us without needing to show your REAL ID – or any identification at all,” stated Skena in the announcement.
The enforcement of the REAL ID standard arrives two decades after the 2005 REAL ID Act was enacted alongside growing security protocols post-9/11. This legislation mandated that U.S. citizens require identifications meeting stringent “security criteria for IDs issued by states,” specifically pertaining to drivers’ licenses and identity cards.
The actual implementation of these regulations spanned nearly twenty years, encountering numerous obstacles throughout the process. However, with enforcement finally set to start, individuals without a compliant identification document will shortly find themselves incapable of accessing federal buildings or boarding internal flights.
