What appearance does the new StarID have?
In Alabama, the STAR ID closely resembles your present driver’s license but has a distinctive feature—a gold star in the upper-left corner. In contrast, other states use different markers such as black stars, star-shaped cutouts, or motifs representing their state emblem or even a gold grizzly bear.
When will I be required to use my Star ID?
On May 7, 2025, Alabama residents who are at least 18 years old will require a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or state identification card.
Alabama residents must present a STAR ID or passport to fly on commercial airlines. The STAR ID will also be required to access military installations or access secure federal buildings.
How can I obtain my STAR ID in Alabama?

Why do I need a Real ID?
The Real ID Act was enacted in 2005 as an additional security measure after the Twin Towers attacks. Initially scheduled to take effect in 2008, enforcement has been repeatedly postponed and finally set to begin on May 7, 2025. As stated by official guidelines, this act aims to establish standards for issuing identity documents like drivers’ licenses and state IDs.

What occurs if I fail to obtain my STAR ID?
If obtaining a STAR ID isn’t possible and you’re planning domestic trips, the TSA also accepts alternative forms of identification for flying within the U.S. For a full list of accepted IDs, check out the TSA’s official site.
In Alabama, without a STAR ID, you can continue using your standard state-issued driver’s license or non-driver ID card for routine activities such as operating a vehicle, conducting bank transactions, and casting votes.
