Southwest Revamps Fare Classes and Rewards Exclusive for Credit Cardholders: Here’s What You Need to Know

Further modifications are headed for the budget airline.

  • Southwest Airlines is revamping its fare classes by introducing new categories along with enhanced benefits.

  • Want to Escape Plus will now be called Preference Elite.

  • The airline is increasing benefits for those who use Southwest Airlines credit cards, including the chance to select their seats and receive one complimentary checked bag.

Travelers will no longer hear “Wanna Get Away?” from a well-known budget carrier.

Additionally, they plan to introduce new benefits for their credit card holders. Among these changes, they will phase out the “Wanta Get Away” brand name for their budget-friendly tickets.

Travelers might recognize Southwest’s present fare system, consisting of Business Select, Anytime, and Wanna GetAway Plus options. These will soon have new names: Choice Extra, Choice Preferred, and Choice, correspondingly. The budget-friendly category currently named WannaGetAWay will now be referred to as Southwest’s Basic fare option.

“One traveler commented, ‘Wanting to Escape displayed more character; this is merely depressing,’” as stated in the report.

The updated fare categories factor in the newly introduced and rather contentious allocated seating rule. Individuals who opt for the Basic rate won’t have the chance to pick their seats; instead, these will be designated during check-in. Those selecting the Choice tier get a regular seat, positioned towards the rear of the aircraft with typical legroom space. Meanwhile, passengers choosing the Choice Preferred tier can secure either a preferred seat—again, offering normal legroom but located near the front—or simply select a standard seat ahead of time when making their reservation.

Even though the fresh fare packages have been unveiled recently, they won’t be available for purchase until the third quarter of 2025, specifically for trips taking off in 2026. Apart from Basic—which you can choose when making reservations beginning May 28—Southwest has yet to specify precise release timings for the remaining fare options.

“Tony Roach, the Southwest Airlines Executive Vice President of Customer & Brand, stated that with new options such as seat selection and extra legroom, their improved fare packages allow customers to tailor their journey while continuing to benefit from our top-notch dependability and customer service,” he explained.

Cardholders using the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Card can enjoy additional advantages like choosing seats without being restricted by specific fares or credit card tiers. Moreover, these travelers will have their initial checked baggage fee waived, in addition to enjoying all current cardholder privileges.

The airline
grabbed attention earlier this year
to discontinue a 54-year-old policy providing two complimentary checked bags per passenger. This significant shift led many devoted Southwest customers to declare they would take their business elsewhere.
