Lubbock Air Travelers Urged: Meet the Upcoming REAL ID Deadline

The implementation date for mandating REAL IDs at airport security checkpoints was scheduled for May 7, 2025. The purpose of this measure was to enhance security as recommended by the 9/11 Commission, ensuring that individuals presenting an ID were verified against their boarding passes.

In Texas, a REAL ID would feature a gold star in the upper-right corner. However, for other states, the designs differ. Patricia Mancha, who serves as the TSA Media Spokesperson, discussed the significance of this updated requirement.

“As someone who frequently travels, I’m pleased with this new policy since it ensures that every individual passing through security checkpoints has undergone verification, providing us extra peace of mind. Moreover, starting from May 7, when entering specific federal facilities outside the airport premises, visitors must show their REAL IDs,” Mancha explained.

If travelers do not have their REAL IDs when they get to the airport, it would make it harder getting through TSA.

“We collaborate with them to confirm their identification, and this process remains unchanged from May 7th onwards. However, the distinction lies in the scenario where more than 100 individuals lack a Real ID, placing you at spot No. 99 on that list; in such a case, we cannot ensure that your identity verification will be completed promptly enough for your scheduled flight,” explained Mancha.

Other accepted forms of identification include passports or green cards; however, IDs issued or updated within the past nine years will suffice.

“In Texas, it’s considered a single-issue state, which means that anyone obtaining an ID or driver’s license since 2016 probably possesses a Real ID. Currently, we’re at about 98% compliance,” Mancha stated.
