Gambit’s Takedown: Inside the Mayor’s Time in 2024

In your Breakdown:
Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s travels have recently garnered significant attention, and a recent article from Gambit has only intensified the heated debate surrounding the issue.

Gambit submitted an information request to obtain all the official schedules for the mayor in 2024 and analyzed how she allocated her time.

They discovered that during an average week, when the mayor wasn’t away, she had approximately 16 hours and 39 minutes allocated for scheduled activities each week.

In 2024, there were 74 days without any planned events. A majority of these days fell on weekends and public holidays.

In total, she spent:

44 hours attending festivals

  • Over 68 hours spent in exclusive meeting sessions
  • 385 hours spent at ribbon cuttings and public engagements
  • Over 215 hours carrying out governmental duties
  • And nearly 1300 hours of travel time.

The travel schedule for 2024 encompassed 16 business trips, amounting to a total of 62.5 days spent out of state.

Cantrell has endured years of scrutiny over the expenses related to her travels as mayor, which include approximately $30,000 spent on first-class flight upgrades; she pledged to reimburse this amount.

Earlier this year, a judge halted the city council’s effort to prohibit the mayor from embarking on official travel. This escalation occurred following Mayor Cantrell’s withdrawal from a multimillion-dollar agreement with the Orleans Parish School Board.

Following this, the council implemented fresh guidelines concerning travel limitations and paperwork needed from municipal staff members.

However, returning to Cantrell’s agenda—you won’t find listed in her schedule or within the provided data all the phone calls, messages, and additional impromptu tasks that form part of her role.

The Gambit narrative provides additional insight into that aspect and how it measures up against other public figures. You can check out their account here.
