LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WXIX) — With the 151st edition of the Kentucky Derby just around the corner, authorities warn that this major annual event could also be one of the riskiest periods for human trafficking, making it a significant concern alongside being one of the biggest sports spectacles of the year.
“I understand this is an exhilarating week for many, however, we must also face certain truths about major events such as the Kentucky Derby,” states Kentucky Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman.
It is anticipated that tens of thousands of individuals will journey to the Commonwealth for the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby.
As people travel more, they become increasingly worried about human trafficking.
The Kentucky Attorney General, Russell Coleman, states that combating human trafficking and drug-related issues are key priorities for the state as they prepare for the yearly event.
“Sadly, human trafficking tends to be more common during major events with sizable crowds and high traffic volumes that might divert attention from potential witnesses who would normally intervene,” he explains.
Kentucky Lieutenant Governor Coleman advises that if you’re attending the Derby, be vigilant for any suspicious indicators and report anything unusual you might notice.
Human trafficking survivors might appear underfed or anxious,” she explains. “They could seem uneasy making eye contact, remain quiet, or let another person do the talking for them. There might be visible injuries or indications of psychological mistreatment, and often they won’t have control over personal documents or earnings.
