TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – The sound of the audience roaring was exhilarating following an impressive and much-anticipated victory by the Breckenridge Village basketball squad.
“It occurs annually. We begin discussing it at the start of each year when people talk about their outfits and make signs,” stated Melissa Perkins, who serves as the President of Breckenridge Village.
“That’s part of the community that frequently gets left out of sporting chances, but doesn’t necessarily have to,” stated Jereme Hubbard, who serves as both the head girls’ basketball coach and the sports information director at Brook Hill.
This is the major annual match for Breckenridge Village that they look forward to every year.
Supporters, team members, and athletes unite to create an extraordinary experience for the community members of Breckenridge through the game.
“We aren’t approaching this like an ordinary Tuesday or Friday evening event, yet we still want to put in the extra effort to make it truly memorable for everyone involved. These individuals have brought their families and friends along, and it’s our chance to create something really special for them,” explained Hubbard.
Supporters from both teams applauded Breckenridge after every move, while at Brook Hill, it was oddly quiet since the hometown audience had temporarily adopted a different team for the match.
“Interacting with that energy adds excitement and enjoyment to our experience,” stated Luke McNeel, a senior from Brook Hill who has participated in the event for several years.
Although Brook Hill might have suffered a defeat on the scoreboard, the happiness it brings to the community outweighs any victory imaginable.
“Our residents and day program participants really enjoy it. They will be discussing it for weeks,” stated Perkins.
“They warrant a large audience, and I’m pleased that we can provide them with the enthusiasm they truly deserve. Seeing how they thrive off of this energy and observing the joyous expressions on their faces makes it all worthwhile,” stated McNeel.
This single match is the sole competition between the two factions; however, each side has expressed their desire to increase the number of contests they host over the course of the year.
