The Danville Life Saving Crew is transforming emergency responses through their advanced drone technology, which was notably instrumental in fighting a recent wildfire on Arnett Boulevard.
Jim Mullins, who serves as both a paramedic and a drone pilot for the team, highlighted the benefits of using this advanced technology. He stated, “In case of an emergency, once we observe what’s going on, we can guide where the Emergency Medical Services should be positioned and inform them about their necessary locations. This makes everything function exceptionally smoothly.”
The drones offer a 400-foot aerial perspective, which helps first responders with various duties like managing crowds, observing fire perimeters, and finding individuals who are lost. Mullins emphasized how these unmanned vehicles support law enforcement and rescue crews. He mentioned, “We ask them, ‘What exactly are you searching for? What assistance do you require from us?’ This way, the police force along with others can examine open areas, while we cover the woodland zones beyond your line of sight.”
In the latest brushfire incident, the drones’ thermal imaging abilities assisted in tracking the progression and pinpointing areas of high heat. “Previously, we’ve experienced fires along the bypass where all one could observe was smoke rising from within the treetops. It’s uncertain whether these flames are advancing towards the bypass or moving closer to residential zones. With our current technology, we can closely monitor this situation and collaborate with the Danville Fire Department or the commanding officers to determine if resources should be focused here or there,” explained Mullins.

The drones come with zoom functionalities as well as a speaker system, aiding in the rescue of people who are stuck or lost by providing crucial supplies such as an AED, water bottles, or life jackets.
Mullins highlighted the crucial role of community backing and contributions for the team’s activities. He stated, “Without this support, we wouldn’t be able to continue our work. Our aim is to ensure that the Danville Life Saving Crew remains operational for at least another 85 years.”
The team aims to grow its drone collection using funds from grants and donations, with aspirations that their future potential will be limitless.
