Situated close to the town of Halsey, the Bessey Ranger District within this 141-square-mile forest offers an unusual and unexpectedly untamed experience. With hardly any designated trails, exploring here means crafting your very own journey. Begin along the single marked hiking trail in the region—a sand-covered, three-mile trek that meanders across hillsides and brushes against fragments of prairies. Upon reaching the endpoint, ascend the Scott Fire Tower, a functional lookout point standing tall at fifty feet high, from where you can survey potential routes ahead. Afterward, connect various cattle tracks and ancient logging pathways amidst impressive stands of ponderosa pines as well as areas reclaimed for grazing, replenishing your supply of drinking water at scattered windmill-equipped cattle tanks spread throughout the woodland.
