U.S. Airlines Struggle as Economy Falters: Demand Dips

*Airline executives are dialing back their optimism for 2025 as domestic travel demand shows signs of softening.

Leading airlines such as Delta, American, Southwest, and Alaska Airlines are reconsidering their expansion plans, pointing to broad economic instability and lower-than-predicted ticket sales.

In recent earnings calls, airline chiefs cited various elements leading to decreased demand, including fluctuating markets and an uncertain economic landscape during President Donald Trump’s tenure.

“Nobody truly enjoys ambiguity when discussing their potential vacation plans and spending money they’ve worked hard to save,” stated American Airlines CEO Robert Isom.

The unpredictable situation has caused multiple airlines to reduce their earlier expansive growth strategies. Delta, Southwest, and Alaska Airlines have withdrawn their 2025 financial projections, with American Airlines also doing the same. However, United Airlines stays positive and anticipates maintaining profitability even amid an economic downturn.

In March, domestic ticket prices fell by 5.3% compared to the previous year, after declining by 4% in February. The excess of available seats, coupled with a delay in business and governmental travel, is compelling airlines to reduce their fare rates.

Corporate travel, which was once highly profitable, is also experiencing a slowdown.

The fares have not been as robust as they were during the fourth quarter of last year and continuing through January and the early part of February,

Shane Tackett, who serves as the Chief Financial Officer at Alaska Airlines, stated to CNBC.

“The demand within the industry remains strong; however, it hasn’t reached the peak levels that were expected to persist from last year.”

Even with strong global interest and steady sales in first-class cabins, the overall local market continues to be slow.

“Clarity will revive the economy, and I believe it will do so rather swiftly,” Isom noted, echoing the optimism prevalent throughout the sector.
