Starting in 2027, individual charges for entering the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness will increase over twofold as proposed by the U.S. Forest Service on Monday.
The agency stated in a press release that additional funds are required since “expenses related to wilderness rangers and upkeep costs for entry points, portages, and campsites have risen significantly.”
For adults, the charge would rise from $16 to $40 per journey; for youths, from $8 to $20.
The fees for entering the BWCAW within the Superior National Forest have remained unchanged since 2008, according to the agency.
The Forest Service mentioned on their website that the additional charges will “directly benefit the national forests” and noted that guests can anticipate enhancements. Furthermore, these added fees will help cover costs associated with search-and-rescue operations.
