Southwest Airlines Announces Big Change Before Fall Travel

Late last month Southwest Airlines instituted its new bag policy that was previously announced in March.

“For reservations booked and ticketed or changed on or after May 28, 2025, checked baggage fees will apply. We will offer two free checked bags to our Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and Business Select Customers, and one free
checked bag
to A-List Members and other select Customers. Southwest will credit the first checked bag for Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers,” the airline said in a statement at the time.

A few days prior to implementing their new baggage policy, Southwest announced that the fee for the first checked bag would be $35, and the charge for the second one would be $45. Although passengers were upset about this alteration, they may choose to forgive the airline following their recent statement just before the football season begins.

Southwest Airlines announced it added 59 flights for 19 college football games this fall. The airline also announced six additional flights are scheduled to depart to Columbus, OH, from Dallas, Austin and Houston on Aug. 29 and eight will return to those cities Aug. 31, before a rematch of January’s national semifinal game between Texas and Ohio State.

“OKC Will Rogers International Airport will have direct connections to four destinations not usually serviced: Eugene, OR (for the game between Oklahoma State and Oregon on September 6th), Detroit (where Michigan faces off against Oklahoma on September 6th), Atlanta (as Auburn takes on Oklahoma on September 20th), and Birmingham, AL (during the match between Oklahoma and Alabama on November 15th),” stated the airline.

While major brands aren’t the only ones joining in, the airline also intends to launch routes between Jackson, MS, and Las Vegas for the first time. This connection is scheduled for the HBCU Classic game between Grambling and Jackson State on October 25th.

While college football enthusiasts aren’t the sole beneficiaries, Southwest Airlines has also introduced 54 extra flights for 24 crucial NFL games this autumn. These include seven previously unavailable direct routes now up for booking during specific weekend dates: Buffalo to Atlanta, Buffalo to Charlotte, Kansas City to Jacksonville, Kansas City to Buffalo, Milwaukee to Cleveland, New Orleans to Buffalo, and Oakland to New Orleans.
