The National Mall is encircled by fences that block off the parade path along Constitution Avenue. This is all part of the Army’s 250th anniversary festivities.
Based on the revised permit issued by the National Park Service, approximately 50,000 individuals are expected to attend the celebrations. This number has been reduced from an original projection of 200,000. Nevertheless, visitors who have already arrived in town seem quite enthusiastic.
Obstacles have been placed around the area of the Washington Monument, and work teams were putting the finishing touches on stairs and platforms for visitors to use on Friday afternoon.
“I’ve never witnessed a military parade before, so it will certainly pique my interest. Although I have experience with the fire department and participated in their parades, those events were quite different,” explained Chris Gerace, who came all the way from New Jersey.
Individuals from various parts of the nation have gathered here to catch a view of the strength of America’s military forces.
About 6,600 troops and over 150 vehicles are anticipated for the parade.
“Observing all those tanks, and as we strolled past, there was a helicopter nearby. It really made me notice the strong military presence and appreciate their efforts for our nation, thus respecting them,” stated Clifford Reynolds, who came from Norfolk, Va.
A few individuals have come to D.C. to watch their relatives in the parade.
Our son-in-law is in the Army, so he will participate in the parade,” explained Jesse Burris from Knoxville, TN. “Our daughter was also going to attend, so we decided to come along too. We’re excited about being part of this historic event; such occasions aren’t very common.
Poor weather is a worry for the anticipated tens of thousands of attendees. However, many aren’t overly concerned.
“We anticipate rain, yes, but at the very least it should bring cooler temperatures, perhaps,” Burris stated.
“That’s how it is. We’ve got ponchos, so we’re ready,” Gerace stated.
Come rain or shine, supporters of the Army express their enthusiasm about being in D.C.
There are 18 miles of fencing around the downtown area for the parade, with just two access points available. These can be found at 14th Street between Madison and Jefferson, and C Street between 18th and 19th Streets.
