Heroes Tournament Soars High, Raising Funds for Greater Peoria Honor Flight

GERMANTOWN HILLS, Ill. (WMBD) — A 101-year-old World War II veteran participated in a local baseball fundraising event by throwing the inaugural pitch.

The first-ever Heroes Tournament united eight nearby youth baseball squads with the aim of raising funds for the Greater Peoria Honor Flight.

The three-day event is taking place at MTCO Park in Germantown Hills and was conceived by Alex Jackson.

Jackson leads the Germantown Hills Warbirds as their head coach and has military experience himself. He emphasized that the focus is on expressing gratitude for those who have served.

“Just to feel that their efforts are recognized. The sole term I would employ is simply knowing that their contributions are valued, whether for what they have done in the past or for what they are currently undertaking as part of their active service,” he stated.

He aims to surpass $5,000 in fundraising. The entirety of the funds raised will go to the Greater Peoria Honor Flight.

The upcoming Honor Flight is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6.
