The Texas Department of Public Safety Foundation held its second yearly BBQ competition on Friday afternoon, offering barbecue, country music, and additional entertainment at The Tailgate venue.
The fundraiser supports the organization.

, a nonprofit organization that assists officers, agents, rangers, and staff within the department during times of need.
“We’re holding one of our fundraisers in support of the employees of DPS, from the administrative staff to the troopers and anybody within the department,” said Darrell Taylor, chairman of the DPS Foundation. “This foundation provides support through scholarship funds or emergency financial assistance.”
Taylor mentioned that should anything affect a trooper, the foundation could offer emergency financial assistance to help families cover costs like accommodation, meals, and other needs.
We’ll offer emergency funds to assist a family in getting back on their feet,” he said. “We aim to accomplish this within 24 hours or faster.
The foundation also provides scholarships for kids and dependents of DPS employees.
Although the DPS Foundation has organized various fundraisers across the state, last year marked their inaugural BBQ cook-off event in West Texas.
The number of participants this year doubled compared to last year, and they also introduced an evening concert. Wade Bowen was set to perform at night, with proceeds from the tickets supporting the foundation as well.
We’re highly grateful for Wade Bowen performing at this event,” stated Sgt. Steven Blanco from the DPS. “He demonstrates great support for first responders and law enforcement.
About 13 local teams showcased their barbecuing skills for the sanctioned competition, vying to make the best chicken, ribs and brisket.
Blanco mentioned that out of all the participating teams, two consisted of departments, while the remaining ones hailed from the oil and energy industry.
Patrol members, agents, and park rangers were present at the gathering, engaging with attendees and providing answers to various inquiries. Several law enforcement officials took part as adjudicators in the cook-off contest.

Including prizes such as a Colt Model 1911 .45 automatic Series 70 Texas Ranger pistol, a retired THP Sig Sauer P320 9mm handgun, and framed U.S. and Texas flags from a DPS patrol boat used in Operation Lone Star.
The community backing has been fantastic,” Blanco stated. “We received numerous sponsorships from the oil sector based in the Permian Basin as well as tremendous support from Wade Bowen and The Tailgate.
