Amanda Syrowatka, an experienced traveler and the director of the Viceroy Bali resort in Indonesia, advises those looking for a holiday to prioritize activities that ignite their passions before choosing a location where these can be pursued. On his website rovinrv.com, Richard Burgon focuses more on trips centered around his individual interests instead of particular destinations when offering guidance on recreational vehicles.
These two astute tourists are highlighting how traveling can serve as a way for personal expression and discovery. This form of tourism has recently been termed “passion travel” and has gained an increasingly large following among enthusiasts and travelers alike.
A recent survey conducted by Thrillist.com, described as “a leading online platform dedicated to passion-driven travel experiences,” revealed that 77% of individuals from Generation Z and millennials resonate with the idea of what they call ‘passion travel.’ These excursions cover a wide range of interests depending on personal preferences.
When respondents were asked about their preferences for travel plans, food, history, and music topped the list; however, these choices differed across various age demographics. Specifically, 73% of Generation Z participants expressed willingness to organize trips centered around gastronomic adventures, whereas only 49% of Baby Boomers concurred with this sentiment. Additionally, 43% of millennials indicated they could be enticed to take vacations inspired by beloved movies or television series, though other generations displayed lower levels of enthusiasm for such an idea.
Perhaps the most iconic instance of music-driven passionate tourism was associated with Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, spanning from March 2023 to December 2024, featuring 149 performances across five continents. These events provided an extensive look back at all of Swift’s studio releases, lasting nearly four hours each and setting records as the top-earning tour ever. A multitude of “Swifties,” her devoted fan base, structured their travel arrangements around attending one or multiple concert dates during this period.
A loyal admirer of Bruce Springsteen who resides in New York City and has journeyed to various locations including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas within the U.S., along with international destinations such as Canada, Denmark, and Italy for his performances. Passionate trailblazers often enjoy sharing their interests with fellow enthusiasts. Beverly Ugwu, a TikToker based in London, has amassed millions of views through her “Is It Worth the Wait?” series, where she delves into some of London’s frequently hyped yet potentially underwhelming eateries. Additionally, Rhianna Taylor creates TikTok content offering insights about budgeting, hygiene standards, and additional features of lesser-known boutique hotels in her videos titled “Unique Hotels You’ve Probably Never Heard Of.”
Unsurprisingly, this form of travel presents numerous potential advantages and opportunities for learning to those who dare to experience it. It piques your interest. By stepping away from your routine temporarily, you immerse yourself in an unfamiliar setting ripe for exploration. Here, you gain insights into the lifestyles of individuals in different locales, understand the reasons behind their traditions, and discover many intriguing aspects of their cultures.
You savor life at a leisurely pace. Those who rush to see every exhibit at the Louvre in one day or cram multiple European nations into two weeks often come back tired and strained. In reality, decreasing your tempo lets you engage with and cherish more experiences.
When things take a turn for the worse, concentrate on aspects within your power. There’s no changing an overlooked departure or shuttered exhibit, yet you have command over your response to unfavorable developments. Will you succumb to worry and irritation, or will you channel your efforts into finding ways to enhance circumstances—or alternatively, learn acceptance when improvement isn’t possible?
You could develop or enhance your skill at recognizing and valuing beauty in minor, routine events that often go unnoticed around us. This may encompass the sound of leaves blowing across a yard during fall or the melody of a bird singing early in the morning. For instance, I remember how striking it was for me when I first savored the aroma of freshly baked bread emanating from a local bakery in a quaint French village.
Maybe the greatest benefit is that you could uncover fresh interests you’ll want to explore once you get back home. Inspired by my delightful experience on a 12-person canal tour in France, I enrolled with American Cruise Lines for their river journeys across scenic waterways in America. Post-visit at the renowned Gardens of Versailles, commissioned by French monarch Louis XIV in 1661, I ventured to examine numerous top-tier gardens situated close to my residence.
Here are some instances of adventurous travels that I have enjoyed abroad and still relish within the United States. Keep these experiences in mind when planning your upcoming journey.
WHEN YOU GO
Look online for vacations that align with your interests, no matter what they may be.
