BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) — During their meeting on Wednesday, the East Baton Rouge Metro Council approved hiring an advisor for the River Center development initiative. However, tensions flared up prior to the voting process.
“What I have seen is utterly revolting,” stated Councilwoman Jennifer Racca.
The River Center development project in the city was initiated following the construction of a new $400 million LSU arena.
Councilman Darryl Hurst stated his support for the project; however, he isn’t pleased with how things are progressing.
“This represents a desire rather than a necessity. Even when examining our stormwater system and the problems associated with it, we remain without solutions,” stated Hurst.
“To claim that we will be detracting from other crucial priorities within the parish is entirely incorrect and merely an attempt to instill fear,” stated Councilman Aaron Moak.
During the conversation, allegations of an ethical breach were directed towards attorney Charles Landry, who is involved in the advisor agreement.
Hurst stated, “I’ll take out the term ‘ethical’ and use ‘conflict of interest’ instead.”
“No, a conflict of interest is even more problematic. I assure you, I do not have a conflict of interest,” responded Landry.
“Do you receive any grievances from the bar association?” questioned Racca.
“Absolutely not,” responded Landry.
After getting the conversation back on topic, the council agreed to hire Hunden Partners. This Chicago-based firm will now search for a developer to bring the River Center Convention and Hotel project to life.
Councilwoman Carolyn Coleman stated, ‘For those who might feel somewhat hesitant, they will join us as soon as they witness the momentum building up. They’ll participate when they realize the positive impact it will have.’
It might take some time before we notice this change. According to Rob Hunden, who leads Hunden as their CEO, identifying a suitable developer could require up to two years.
The city attorney will proceed with drafting a contract involving Hunden Partners. Following mutual agreement from both parties, it will then be submitted to the Metro Council for final endorsement.
