Real IDs Now Required for Air Travel and Access to Federal Sites

Grasping Real ID requirements before the expiration date

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – By Wednesday, Americans will require Real IDs to either board commercial airplanes or access federally protected areas. Failure to possess one could result in being barred from these activities.

It’s likely that many Americans already possess Real ID-compliant driver’s licenses or identification cards, featuring a star in the top-right corner.

Damita Eaton, an inhabitant of the western part of Indianapolis, stated, “I don’t possess one yet as I don’t travel by air. It has probably been ages since my last flight, and I’ve only visited a federal facility once. Therefore, obtaining one doesn’t seem pressing right now. However, I will get it eventually! Typically, I prefer waiting till the deadline approaches.”

You wouldn’t want to feel even more frustrated knowing you have to pay a fine for not having one. So, you might as well get it. It costs around $12, but if your renewal was recent, it would only be approximately $9.

Visitors might face prolonged inspection procedures at airports and could potentially be refused boarding if they do not have Real IDs.

Prospero Van Buketi, the founder and CEO of Van Business Travel LLC based in Indianapolis, encouraged his clientele to obtain Real IDs. He explained, “All you have to demonstrate is a residential address. You’ll be required to present documentation verifying your address along with either your Social Security card or a passport prior to receiving a Real ID.”

U.S. passports continue to be valid options for traveling domestically by air.

Additionally, parents can find reassurance that children won’t be required to show ID when passing through TSA security checkpoints for domestic flights from airports; however, this differs for international trips. “Certainly, they must possess either a passport or carry a birth certificate if traveling with a minor,” explained Van Buketi.

Although Real IDs are essential for boarding planes and accessing certain federal facilities, U.S. residents without these cards can still operate vehicles and cast their votes.
