KONA (HawaiiNewsNow) — At Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport on Hawaii Island, the runway will undergo rehabilitation during nighttime closures.
Runway 17-35 will be closed from 10 PM Wednesday until 6 AM Thursday as part of an ongoing pavement improvement initiative.
The runway has been functioning at a shortened length of 7,000 feet since February, all while continuing with flight activities.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation says the length will remain reduced while work continues, and will return to its full length of 11,000 feet in early October.
The entire
runway rehabilitation project
will keep going until April 2026.
Improvements include pavement rehabilitation, new runway markings, and electrical and lighting improvements.
