CDC Issues Travel Warning as Measles Outbreaks Surge

The CDC is advising travelers to be cautious as measles cases are increasing globally.

The health organization reports that an increasing number of tourists from abroad are contracting this easily spread lung infection, which can be transmitted when someone who has it coughs or sneezes.

The CDC stated that most individuals bringing measles into the U.S. are typically unvaccinated citizens traveling abroad where they become infected before returning home.

Cases are rising in many countries around the world. In the United States, 42 new cases have been reported in the last week, mainly among people who were not vaccinated.

According to the CDC’s guidelines for measles vaccinations for individuals traveling internationally, all passengers must ensure they have received the full course of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine. This includes:

  • A preliminary dosage for babies aged 6 to 11 months,
  • A minimum of two doses administered at least 28 days apart for individuals aged 12 months and above who lack sufficient proof of immunity.

Travelers heading abroad are vulnerable to measles if they haven’t been either:

  • Having received full vaccination at least 14 days before traveling,
  • Or have had measles before.

According to the CDC, travelers ought to consult a healthcare provider if they experience symptoms such as a rash, high fever, cough, runny nose, or red, watery eyes either during their trip or up to three weeks following their return.

Individuals who believe they may be suffering from measles are advised to inform the healthcare facility prior to their visit,” states the CDC. “Notifying them beforehand allows the staff at the healthcare facility to implement measures ensuring that measles does not spread within the premises.
