The number of tourists visiting Guernsey rose during the initial three months of 2025 as opposed to the corresponding timeframe in the previous year.
According to data provided by The Tourism Management Board (TMB), a total of 21,928 tourists visited the island, marking a rise of 6%.
A survey conducted by the Guernsey Hospitality Association (GHA) revealed that 70% of participants noted a decline in room occupancy rates in April when compared to the previous year during the same period.
Hannah Beacom, who chairs the TMB, stated, “There is plenty to feel positive about.”
‘Positive direction’
She stated, “This indicates that many aspects are progressing positively, and we have confidence that 2025 will mark a profitable year for the sector.”
The TMB statistics indicated a 6% growth in the total day trip sector, along with a 38% surge in business day travelers.
The analysis showed that 73% of the visitors came from the UK, 14% from Jersey, 3% from France, and 9% from other locations.
In comparison to the initial three months of 2024, the number of tourists coming from France nearly tripled, while there was an uptick of 9% in travelers from the UK. Conversely, visitor numbers dropped by 7% from Jersey and saw a decline of 15% originating from other locations.
‘Most valuable’
The GHA mentioned that they polled their members to assess occupancy rates from April through September.
The survey revealed that 46% of participants thought their occupancy rates would decrease compared to 2024, 32% predicted they would remain similar, and 22% anticipated an uptick.
According to a statement from GHA, they noted, “While we recognize that guests who stay overnight do not encompass the entirety of our island’s tourist sector, it is encouraging to observe growth in arrivals from France, particularly those visiting for the day. This influx undoubtedly contributes to fostering a lively atmosphere both within and surrounding St Peter Port.”
However, it’s the guests who remain for an extended period that prove to be the most beneficial to our sector and the island’s financial well-being.
