Released its yearly Summer Travel Index, highlighting the most popular international spots for American tourists.
The study revealed that American tourists are seeking destinations that offer bustling urban centers as well as serene coastal retreats, with 51% of them emphasizing that their main purpose for traveling is to unwind and revitalize.
“It’s part of a continuing pattern where people are keen to delve deeper into the cultures they experience and seek out less trodden paths,” says Hilary Fischer-Groban, Senior Director of Global Brand, Insights, and Communications, to Make It.
Many locations serve as bases from which you can engage in popular activities and easily venture into others. This truly reflects the varied interests of today’s travelers.
For ranking the cities, TripAdvisor utilized information gathered through an extensive online poll involving more than 2,800 participants across six nations—Australia, Japan, France, Singapore, the UK, and the US—from March 26 to April 8, 2025. Additionally, they factored in search activity from voyagers using TripAdvisor during the period spanning from February 1 to April 10, 2025, concerning trips scheduled within the timeframe of June 1 to August 31, 2025.
Four out of the first ten popular spots that US tourists are flocking to are located in the Caribbean.
“People are really craving some relaxation and some great beaches. I think it’s a testament to the awesome work of the hospitality industry in these places,” Fischer-Groban says. “I think we see a lot of beautiful innovation and freshness in some of the properties there that are definitely pulling folks in.”
No. 1 international hotspot for American tourists: Cancún, Mexico
Cancún, Mexico, has been named the leading choice for American tourists.
Fischer-Groban notes that it consistently ranks high and remains a favorite choice. The destination offers a wide array of natural beauty suitable for all tastes. Additionally, Cancún boasts exceptional service along with accommodations spanning nearly every budget level. Its accessibility is further enhanced by the presence of a significant international airport.
Cancún is situated in southeastern Mexico and serves as a major travel hotspot. This region is renowned for its pristine white sandy shores and notable cultural attractions, including the submerged sculpture museum close to Isla Mujeres.
The city is close to popular Mexican destinations like Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Between May and early September, visitors can frequently spot whale sharks in this region.
