REAL ID Deadline: Is Your Card Ready?

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) — The REAL ID enforcement date has arrived. Starting now, attempting to fly using just your driver’s license might cause delays at airport security checkpoints.

A REAL ID features a star in the top corner.

Beginning on Wednesday, if you lack this identification or another compliant one such as a passport, you will require extra screening at the airport security checkpoint.

TSA says if you don’t have that star, you should get to the airport at least three hours early.

Regardless of whether you possess a compliant ID or not, TSA advises anticipating delays as they shift to the new system.

You require a REAL ID to access military installations or sensitive federal sites.

To obtain a REAL ID, you must provide
documents
verifying your identification along with your birthdate, Social Security details, Vermont residence, and U.S. legal standing.

In Vermont, nearly 92% comply with REAL ID standards, placing it among the leaders. Approximately 64% of individuals in New Hampshire possess REAL IDs, whereas just around 43% of identification cards in New York meet these requirements.

Residents of Vermont who require an updated driver’s license might face delays. The DMV’s website indicates that appointment slots for obtaining a new license are fully booked at various offices throughout the state up until late May, with some sites not having availability until mid to late June.
