A multi-agency team has recovered explosives from a passenger. In a statement, the DCI revealed that a multi-agency security team on routine patrol along the Kanyonyoo–Embu Highway intercepted a Meru-bound passenger bus from Mombasa, uncovering a cache of explosives.
“The discovery came during a meticulous search that revealed a medium-sized white carton, branded with LATO Milk logos. Inside, authorities discovered a dangerous haul: ten water gel explosives labelled EXPLOGEL V6, one detonating cord, and two IDEAL Electric Detonators,” ” read part of the statement.
According to the DCI, after the discovery, the bus was swiftly escorted to Kanyonyo Police Station, where the driver, Lawrance Kioko Mutuku, and the conductor, Said Rashid Amour, were taken into custody.
Tahmeed Bus Intercepted Over Explosives – DCI Confirms
Detectives from the Anti-Terrorist Police Unit (ATPU) and the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) acted on forensic leads to identify and apprehend the key suspect who was allegedly the owner of the explosives.
The Detectives identified Brenda Imboyanga Makhulungu who comes from Kakamega County as the main suspect. It is reported that Brenda, who registered the package, had labeled the explosives as “Dawa ya Maji” at Tahmeed’s office in Kakamega.

This package was then transported from Kakamega to Mombasa and then transferred to a bus bound for Meru via Kitui.
Further the DCI stated that the investigation widened, leading to the arrest of two additional suspects in Meru town.
“All five suspects are now in custody in the ongoing probe, with the bus and the seized explosives detained as exhibits,” the DCI added.
2 Arrested After Being Found with Explosives
A similar incident also occurred in Kisii County on September 9, 2024, where two individuals were arrested after being found in possession of explosives.
The two individuals were apprehended along the Kisii-Oyugis Road after police officers stopped the trailer they were traveling in.
“Upon search, the officers discovered three cartons packed with 459 pieces of water gel explosives (V6) and two detonating cords, hidden in plain sight. The suspects are being held in lawful custody at Mosocho Police Station, as detectives dig deeper into the case,” the DCI said.

Additionally, the criminal investigative body announced that the apprehension and seizure of the explosives were based on intelligence information.
