On Tuesday, the South Lake City Council plans to vote on an important revision of the Vacation Home Rental ordinance. This proposed change aims to tackle community worries regarding rental homes and would impose more stringent regulations for property managers operating within residential zones.

Forecast for Northern California predicts warmer temperatures as the official commencement of summer approaches.

“These modifications aim to guarantee that vacation home rentals function in a way that respects both the local community and the environment,” stated South Lake Tahoe Assistant City Manager Hilary Roverud in a press statement.

Key amendments:

• Mandates that local property managers must be accessible round-the-clock every day of the year to address grievances and infractions.

• Requires the property manager to conduct in-person or virtual check-ins to verify the identity of a renter and obtain the renter’s signature on a good neighbor contract.

• Restricts rentals of holiday homes to a maximum of two individuals per bedroom, plus an additional allowance for up to five children aged 13 and younger who do not count towards this restriction.

• Mandates the use of both indoor audio surveillance and outdoor visual recording equipment for property managers to identify disturbances proactively and avoid potential infractions.

• Must adhere to operational requirements consistently, regardless of whether the owners, family members, or friends are utilizing the premises.

We think these changes will tackle the issues raised by our community members while still permitting certain VHRs to function within residential areas,” stated South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tamara Wallace. “Although VHRs boost our economy through job creation and heightened commercial action across the city, we aim to strike a balance between fostering economic growth and ensuring a good standard of living for our residents.

Should the City Council approve the ordinance, it will go into effect on July 17th. To learn more about the revised Vacation Home Rental Ordinance, please visit the official website of the City of South Lake Tahoe.
