Stay Safe on the Water: Essential Kayaking Safety Tips for Summer

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) –

As summer arrives, so do numerous outdoor activities, and if you intend to engage in water sports, there are several safety precautions to consider.

The top activity around here is kayaking. Safety experts advise that for a secure experience, you should familiarize yourself with your path, feel at ease in aquatic environments, possess swimming skills, maintain hydration, and shield yourself from solar rays.

“Have you kayaked before,” said Steve Wright, Owner of Savannah Rapids Kayak. “We also ask questions: can you swim? You know, how do you feel comfortable about water? We have maps; I’ll go over them with you. Over some things, and then when you go down to the water. We do match the kayak with the person. So, depending on weight.”

Savannah Rapids Kayak offers two primary courses: a downstream journey through the canal designed for families, novices, or those seeking a leisurely paddle; and another upstream course intended for more experienced paddlers.

“They’ve got my contact information readily available. So, I tell them that if anyone faces an issue navigating through the canal or along the river, they should reach out to me directly. Typically, at least one of our teams operates around this area; so whether it happens within the canal boundaries or further upstream, assistance will always be nearby,” explained Wright.

Paddling can be enjoyable, yet it has the potential to become risky if you’re not ready for it.

“Having a life jacket and you know that is required by law and wearing a life jacket. When you’re in the river, you know, just staying, one stay away from the bank,” said Wright.

Additional safety advice encompasses mastering a paddling technique, and should your plans involve kayaking in regions with rapids, it’s advisable to have a guide for your initial attempt at least.

“We have bottled water available. Typically, we also keep a cooler out here for everyone’s use. Feel free to refill your water tank as needed. Staying hydrated is particularly important during hotter weather,” explained Wright.
