Flint Hills Rodeo Celebrates 87 Years of Legendary Tradition in Strong City

For 87 years, Strong City has served as the host for the Flint Hills Rodeo. Every summer, bull riding enthusiasts and rodeogoers converge upon this quaint town to enjoy the events.

Lassoing, racing, and riding — Strong City has established a tradition of diving into the dust.

I’ve never come across a man who didn’t feel anxious before hopping on,” remarked Colorado bull rider Cooper McClain. “The feeling when you’re riding…it’s like being on top of the world.

Nearly ninety years later, the Spurs and chaps have turned into traditions passed down through generations.

“My father was a bull rider; he reached the finals six times. I aim to double that,” McClain stated.

Some people acquire their passion for sports through inheritance. Others seem to be born with this enthusiasm already in them.

I’m the same age as the rodeo,” longtime supporter Mike Stout stated. “I came into this world just a few weeks after my mother attended her first rodeo.

The KSN Summer Road Trip heads to Cottonwood Falls.

No matter if it involves bull riding or steer wrestling, Stout has been present at every event he could attend since 1937.

“Indeed, it matters very little which event occurs or the condition of the stock. The bulls are always entertaining,” he remarked.

Whether you’re among the spectators in the stands or out beneath the stadium lights, the Flint Hills Rodeo brings together daring contestants alongside a crowd ready to rally behind them.

“I aspire to become the world champion one day, so I will continue striving relentlessly until I achieve that goal,” McClain stated.

“If you remain at the rodeo tonight, you’ll grasp why. People are enjoying themselves, and even the competitors are finding some amusement, making it worthwhile to return,” Stout mentioned.

Not only do the fans come back every year, but the rodeo also attracts visitors nationwide. A strong city councilmember mentions that this event significantly benefits the local economy.
