Travel Warning: Avoid These Common Airport Blunders, TSA Warns

Consider carefully before plugging in or logging on at the airport.

Federal authorities warn that individuals using free WiFi or public charging points may expose their private information to significant danger.

The Transportation Security Administration issued a warning about cybersecurity risks prevalent during the busy travel period, highlighting two typical actions that might expose travelers to hacker attacks:

  • Avoid USB charging stations. Hackers can install malware at public ports — a method known as “juice jacking” or “port jacking.” Instead, use a TSA-compliant power bank or wall charger.
  • Don’t trust public Wi-Fi. Never enter passwords, credit card numbers, or other personal information while on unsecured networks, especially if you’re planning to shop online or log into financial accounts.

The warning, initially posted on the TSA’s Facebook page, expresses gratitude to the organization’s internal IT department for their insights.
