Travel Alert: Avoid These Common Airport Blunders, TSA Warns

Consider carefully before plugging in or logging on at the airport.

Federal authorities warn that individuals using free WiFi or public charging points may expose their private information to significant danger.

In a warning aimed at cyber-safety during peak travel season, the Transportation Security Administration flagged two common behaviors that could make travelers targets for hackers:

  • Steer clear of USB charging stations since hackers might inject malware through these public ports using techniques called “juice jacking” or “port jacking.” Opt instead for a TSA-approved power bank or simply plug into a wall outlet.
  • Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive activities. Refrain from entering passwords, credit card details, or private data when connected to insecure networks, particularly if you intend to make purchases or access your financial accounts online.

The alert, originally shared on the TSA’s Facebook page, thanks the agency’s internal IT team for the tips.
