Discover BBJ: The Luxurious World of Boeing’s Bespoke Private Jets

Purchasing any private jet, even a
relatively cheap entry-level model
Acquiring such aircraft can be quite expensive; however, Boeing’s lineup of luxury private jets elevates them to another level. In 1998, this major U.S.-based aerospace company introduced the first Boeing Business Jet (BBJ), priced at approximately $40 million when fully equipped. Alternatively, customers could opt for an uncompleted model priced at about $33.75 million, which would later receive a personalized cabin setup. This initial BBJ iteration was essentially a business-oriented variant of the 737-700 series, featuring enhanced undercarriage systems and extra fuel tank options as extras. These enhancements allowed the craft to achieve a maximum flying distance of up to 6,000 nautical miles, enabling non-stop flights across different landmasses without needing intermediate stops for refueling.

The introduction of the initial BBJ proved so popular that Boeing introduced the BBJ2 just one year later, utilizing the more extensive 737-800 platform. In 2006, the company further extended this series with the announcement of the BBJ3—a model distinguished for its greater size and enhanced long-distance capabilities derived from the commercial variant known as the 737-900ER. Currently, the BBJ family encompasses various configurations sourced from different planes in Boeing’s commercial fleet; these options span a wide spectrum ranging from quite costly to extraordinarily pricey. These exclusive offerings cater exclusively to those affluent individuals who have deep pockets, offering top-tier luxury and ample space aboard their flights. With stops rarely required due to their superior performance, BBJs provide unparalleled convenience when traveling between nearly all significant urban centers around the globe.

The Latest Addition To The BBJ Lineup

Boeing’s present selection of BBJ models comprises versions of its 737 MAX, 787, and 777X airplanes. Among these, the variant based on the 777X is the newest inclusion, offering an extravagant interior befitting top global leaders. While specific pricing details for BBJ models tend to remain undisclosed, a sales executive from Lufthansa Technik—a company chosen among just a handful to craft interiors for BBJ planes—provided some insights.
CNN
that the 777X aircraft itself would cost around $450 million. The executive also added that buyers would have to fork out an additional $130 million for a fully-fitted, palatial interior designed by Lufthansa Technik. That pushes the final total well north of half a billion dollars.

It’s enough to make
a number of the most expensive celebrity airplanes
look reasonably affordable in comparison. Accordingly, the 777X-based BBJ isn’t targeted at celebs. Instead, it’s designed specifically for the needs of Middle Eastern heads of state, with owners of similarly sized private jets located in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar. Despite the huge price tag, industry analysts expect more than two dozen examples of the 777X-based BBJ to be built, although Boeing has kept the specifics of its order book under wraps.

Other Current BBJ Models

If an ultrarich purchaser isn’t convinced by the 777X offering, they have numerous alternatives available. Among these choices is the larger BBJ based on the 787, capable of traveling up to 9,960 nautical miles without stopping. This allows someone leaving from Los Angeles or Dubai to reach virtually any global destination directly, whereas a flight starting in New York might not quite make it all the way to southern and western parts of Australia.

Even the smaller 737 MAX-based BBJ is still extremely capable, and can fly directly between Los Angeles and Tokyo or London and Cape Town. All of Boeing’s Business jet models can be fitted with ultra-luxurious interiors by one of the carefully selected suppliers, although, thanks to confidentiality agreements, most of these finished interiors have never been seen by the general public. For the world’s wealthiest heads of state who want to
transport their cars
, possessions, and assistants with them everywhere they go, BBJs are the ultimate lifestyle accessory. For everyone else, they’re a reminder that the world’s wealthiest people get to live a lifestyle that few of us can even imagine.
